Daily Guide Devotional For Today 8th November 2025 (Saturday)

Welcome to Scripture Union Daily Guide Devotional today. As you read, study and meditate, may the Lord Almighty reveal His essence to you in Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Topic: Calling of the reluctant

Opening Prayer
My dear heavenly Father, as I study your word, let it be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

Bible Text
Jeremiah 1:1-19

INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF JEREMIAH
Jeremiah was one of the prophets in Judah, the southern kingdom. He prophesied during the reigns of Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, and Zedekiah who were the last kings who ruled Judah before the exile, from around 627 to 570 BC. Judah was gradually sinking and was eventually conquered by Babylon in 586 BC. He prophesied alongside Zephaniah and Habakkuk in Judah and Ezekiel in Babylon. Baruch was his secretary. His message was “repent and turn to God or He will punish” (Jeremiah 2:19). .

Despite his appeal to the Israelites to repent, they ridiculed, imprisoned, and threw him into a cistern and ultimately, he was taken to Babylon after the fall of Jerusalem. The height of his persecution was rejection by his family, neighbours, friends, false prophets and priests, kings, and his audience. Despite these severe oppositions, he stood alone to proclaim God’s judgment; he announced the new covenant and wept over the fate of his loved country. As a result, he was called the weeping Prophet.

Meditation Question
► Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
► Q3: Is there any command for me to obey?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 8 November 2025 Outline

Jeremiah knew that the divine purpose for him was established long before his birth (Jeremiah 1:4-5). He had an intimate connection with God – “I knew you”. This involves more than just accurate information about Jeremiah, but his approval, choice, and personal commitment. He was called to perform a twofold task – call for repentance and proclamation of judgment. This is seen in the way God puts His words into his mouth (Jeremiah 1:10). Like Jeremiah, we often make excuses when we are asked to do something for the Lord (Jeremiah 1:6). Excuses hinder us from becoming sharp instruments in God’s hands. How were his excuses refuted (Jeremiah 1:6-8)?

Note how God directed, enabled, and reassured him (Jeremiah 1:7-8). Our human inadequacy is always the backdrop for God’s enablement (2 Corinthians 3:5). When God gives His servants a clear calling, He does not accept any excuses. In any case, there is no reason for any. With God’s calling comes God’s gifting. God confirmed Jeremiah’s calling (Jeremiah 1:2,11-16). Knowing he would suffer while fulfilling this ministry, God promised to protect him (Jeremiah 1:17-19). Notice Paul’s experience with God in 2 Corinthians 12:7-10.

Reflection
God never sends anyone out alone. His greatest provision is His presence (vs.8b,19). He equips for the task assigned (Ephesians 4:12) and goes along to help (Matthew 28:20).
